Second Semester, Week 13

Can you believe it...next week is our last week of the semester apart from Mock Trial?  WOW!  Where did the year go?
Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 113 - 116 today. Don't forget to complete the exercises and stay on top of your weekly tests.  We won't get to finish the book together, but I'm sure you'll do fine with the last few lessons. 



Logic:
Great job on the quiz from last week.  I'm torn with trying to do a final given that we've done so many quizzes trying to make sure you understood the last few lessons.  Several have asked if we could get together over the next few weeks to complete the book.  I'm game if you are.  Let's chat about it after Mock Trial.  In the mean time, use the time to work on Mock Trial.


Literature:
I have the majority of your final drafts for your short stories and will try to have them bound hopefully by Mock Trial on the 25th.  No homework here either (more MT time???).


Discovering Atomos
We discussed Lessons 4 in class today as well as distributed a little song to help you memorize the Periodic Table.  You are to complete Lessons 5 - 6 as well as all the "At Home" exercises. We agreed that we'd discuss Lessons 5 - 6 and I'd send home the final to be taken at home.  You can return them the week of Mock Trial.


Mock Trial:
WOW!!!!  What an amazing turn around!  You guys rock!  Now we just have to fine tune, memorize our parts and practice speaking up and flowing.  Take the critiques to heart from the Upper Challenge Students.  We'll see how it goes next week and decide how many practices we'll need next week.

Second Semester, Week 12

Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 109 - 112 today. Don't forget to complete the exercises and stay on top of your weekly tests.  It seems as if things are moving rather quickly and smoothly and we're answering questions in class, however, if you have ANY questions or concerns, please continue to ask them in class or contact me if you need to do so. 


Logic:
We took our quiz today and will discuss them next week (sorry for all the errors on the quiz).  With all we have with the other subjects, especially Mock Trial, you have a break from Logic this week.


Literature:
The final drafts of your short stories along with pictures are to be turned in next week.  Also, read "Stolen Fruit" and "The Gladiators" and be prepared to discuss them in class.


Discovering Atomos
We discussed Lessons 3 in class today.  You are to complete Lesson 4 as well as all the "At Home" exercises, as well as prepare for a quiz next week on the Periodic Table.


Mock Trial:
We did much better this week.  It was great to have the Upper Challenge Students lend their help and give their critiques.  They provide more of the same next week as well.

You know the areas that you need to work on so please respond accordingly.


Don't forget, we'll begin staying a bit later again next week.  We may run as late as 4:30 or 5:00.  It all depends upon how well prepared you are.

Second Semester, Week 11 Updates and Homework

Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 105 - 108 today. Don't forget to complete the exercises and stay on top of your weekly tests.  It seems as if things are moving rather quickly and smoothly and we're answering questions in class, however, if you have ANY questions or concerns, please continue to ask them in class or contact me if you need to do so. 


Logic:
We attempted to do most of the questions from Lesson 17a during class by working in groups at the board.  Again, this just takes practice, so work the problems in Lesson 17a and b as well as the Review problems for Lessons 13 - 17 to help you prepare for the quiz next week.  I want to make sure you understand how to use the Rules of Inference and Replacement before we move on to the next lesson. Do your best and we'll see how it goes next week.

BTW:  You will be able to use your copy of page 207 from the book for your quiz.  You don't have to memeorize the rules, just know how to use them.



Literature:
The final drafts with ALL revisions should be done this week regarding your short stories.  You will turn them in the following week, 4/12.  Also, you are to read "The Tell-Tale Heart" this week and be prepared to discuss it and answer questions.



Discovering Atomos
I'll return the DD quizes next week.  The Chemistry went rather well today.  Most felt it was easy.  We covered Lessons 1 and 2 and you are to do Lesson 3 at home as well as begin memorizing the Periodic Table.


Mock Trial:
Our first dry run helped show that we really need to work on our Opening and Closing Statements and witness questions.  Remember how I was able to pull questions from the witness statements that I wanted to use to tell the story from my point of view and attempt to do the same.  That's the purpose of asking the questions in both direct and cross examination.  Also, remember that you also need to ask questions of your witnesses to help establish who they are and their credibility, or lack thereof, to help substaniate your story as well.

Next week we'll attempt another dry run before the older Challenge students so that they can begin helping and critiquing us.


Don't forget, we'll begin staying a bit later next week.  We may run as late as 4:30 or 5:00.  It all depends upon how well prepared you are.

Second Semester, Week 10

It's the final countdown!!!  Only 4 weeks left!  The majority of the parents responded and voted to end the semester the week prior to Mock Trial, April 19th and not make up the week we missed due to my being out sick.

With that in mind, we've got to batten down the hatches and really get on top of our final projects such as Mock Trial and the Short Stories.

Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 101 - 104 today. Don't forget to complete the exercises and stay on top of your weekly tests.


Logic:
Well, our quiz didn't go as well as expected, but not to fear, it's the same place that my class a couple of years ago hit a wall as well.  We will continue to practice and work towards at least completing Unit 2 if we can. My goal is more or less to make sure they understand what we cover rather than actually completing the entire book.  Therefore, work on Lesson 17a, problems 1 - 8 and 13 - 14; as well as all the problems in 17b.  It will give you more practice with proofs. Do your best and we'll see how it goes next week.


Literature:
We traded stories with our Logic partners today for peer review.  Remember, give constructive criticism and feedback.  If possible, communicate via phone or email so that they can have an opportunity to possibly interject some of your feedback by next week.  You are also to read "The Hammer of God" this week and be prepared to answer the discussion questions.



Defeating Darwinism
I was somewhat disappointed today in that several actually forgot their study notes for the test.  I showed a bit of mercy and compassion by allowing those who needed it to use their books instead, however I also shortened the amount of time given to take the test as a result.  I'll get the papers back to you next week.

We'll begin Chemistry the next week, so look over the vocabulary for Lessons 1 and 2 and practice identifying  atoms and calculating atomic weight.


Mock Trial:
We're showing signs of progress in many ways!!!  This week I've asked that you get together with your respective teams, defense or prosecution, to being preparing your final Opening and Closing Statements, narrow down your questions for direct and cross examination, and begin preparing your witnesses for the stand. 

Next week we'll attempt a dry run to see where we are before I ask the older Challenge students to come critique and help.

Second Semester, Week 9 Updates and Assignments

Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 97 - 100 today. Don't forget to complete the exercises and stay on top of your weekly tests.


Logic:
We discussed Lesson 16 and worked in pairs to complete several of the problems in the Exercise for the same lesson.  For many, this semester's Logic is flowing much better than last semester's and for others, it's still a bit of a blurr.  Don't give up!  It just takes practice and looking at all the rules.  I'll allow you to use a copy of page 207 for your upcoming quiz, but you have to bring in your own copy of it.  Remember, you'll work in pairs so you can help one another.  It will be very helpful to not only study the problems in the actual homework and the  Review for Lessons 13 - 16 because the questions will come from either or a combination of the two.



Literature:
Your Short Stories are due next week!  Everyone should bring in your story for peer review.  I will randomly have a portion of the class read their stories for input and critique from the class.  You are also to read "The Casket Scenes," "Iago's Intentions," "Paradise Lost", "The Pardoner's Tale," and "I Heard the Bells" this week and be prepared to answer the discussion questions.



Defeating Darwinism
This was the last week for DD.  Your final exam is next week, so please review your outlines and notes.  You may use them to take the test.  There are only 10 questions on the test, with one bonus question.

We'll begin Chemistry the following week, so please order the text if you haven't already.


Mock Trial:
A great class today!  I can tell many of you are putting in quite a bit of work regarding MT.  However, several are still lagging behind.  Remember what I told you in last week's email...

"It is your job to know your role/part inside and out.  As lawyers, you must not only know your case, but every thing about the case, your witnesses and the witnesses of your opponents.  If you are a witness, you must take on the persona of your character as if it were your alter-ego and you are striving for an Academy Award. Play time is definitely over and it's now game on! Any slip up, missed piece of evidence, or failure to know your character could cost your team the case.  While we're truly out to have fun and learn, we also want to put forth our best efforts to bring home the win."

This week you're to write questions for the direct and cross examination for the defense witnesses Barrett and McGuire.  We covered quite a bit of information during class that will be beneficial in this process, so I pray you were paying attention.  Also reread the sections on objections and court procedures (identifying evidence, etc.).

Second Semester, Week 8

Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 93 - 96today. Don't forget to complete the exercises and stay on top of your weekly tests.


Logic:
The Logic Tests were returned today.  In an effort not to discourage, but rather encourage, I did not put an actual "letter grade" on the tests, only marked those that were missed. We reviewed Lessons 13 and 14 today; as well as covered Lesson 15 and worked most of the problems in Exercise 15.  Complete the Exercises for all three Lessons by next week.

Literature:
The short stories today truly helped us to look at our lives and the suffering that took place in the life of Christ for us.  It was a moving discussion.  Continue working on your own short stories this week and read "The Necklace" this week and be prepared to answer the discussion questions.

Defeating Darwinism
Another week of great work on the DD Chapter this week.  I'll mix up the pairings next week so be prepared for more of the same with Chapter 8.  We are one week away from the Quiz and end of the book.  Chemistry will begin week 11 so if you haven't purchased Discovering Atomos, please do so.




Mock Trial:
Great Opening Statements!!!  I was really pleased with the effort put into this assignment.  Within the next few weeks, I'll ask that everyone email many of the papers written to the people/teams that will need them for further insight.

Second Semester, Week 7

Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 89 - 92 today. Don't forget to complete the exercises and stay on top of your weekly tests.


Logic:
I've not graded all the tests, however, it appears most did well, with the exception of the a few of the truth tables.  Now that you know which ones I took from the Review Chapters, brush up and I may give you a chance to redeem yourselves with similar tables next week.  Although the Guide suggested only covering Lesson 13, we actually did 13 and 14 because they both cover the same information and compliment each other so well.  If you have problems, we'll address them next week.  In the meantime, try to complete all of the exercises for both lessons.  I'm sure you can do it. ;0)

Literature:
Several people have made major progress on your Short Stories (BRAVO!), however, your length is a bit of a concern.  It's a "short story", not a miniture novel so DO NOT turn in a paper longer than 10 pages.  That's a bit extreme.  You guys are truly amazing writers and I know it's tempting, but hold back and make sure that there's meat, depth, and flavor enough to show all of your gifts and talents within the constraints of the 10 pages.  And for those who feel you could never write 10 pages, it's really okay.  As you can see from the stories we've read, it doesn't always take length to teach a lesson; make a point; add meaning; depth and heart to a situation for your reader.

Read "Father Zossima's Brother" and "The Startling Painting" this week and be prepared to answer the discussion questions.

Mock Trial:
WOW!  I am so proud of you guys!  You're starting to come together and use your critical thinking skills with MT!!!  Great work on your defense presentations.  This week is a big task, writing the Opening Statements for both the defense and the prosecution.  I'll send the "Goldilocks" Opening Statement and a breakdown of what you need to include in your statements separately.  Keep up the good work!  I hope to narrow down the assignment of parts by next week.

Second Semester, Week 6

It was great to have everyone back today.  Some still weren't 100%, but at least we were all here!

Thanks to Mrs. Mahoney for the wonderful breakfast today!  It was a lot of work and well appreciated.

Math:

Logic:
We covered Lesson 12 today and several students actually came to the board and worked a couple of problems!  Way to go!!!!  Complete the exercise for Lesson 12 and the review for the unit.  Next week is our big test on Lessons 1 - 12.

Literature:
Please look at the Guide to see where you need to be regarding your short story.  You should be well on your way with the plot, main characters, setting, etc.  This week please read "God Lives" and "The Teapot" and be prepared to participate in the group discussion.

I really enjoyed having you guys pair up and present the various sections of Chapter 5 today so we'll try that same technique again next week with Chapter 6.  Don't forget to outline the entire chapter because you don't know which section you'll have to present.


Mock Trial:
It's starting to come together in your minds and in our discussions.  I hope to have your roles figured out by next week, however, I may need just a little more time to see how you do with the upcoming assignment.  Look over the remaining pages in the MT Notebook and also try to determine which defense you think we as a class should take regaring Barbara Barrett: Self Defense, BWS, or Reasonable Doubt.  Remember, you have to provide evidence for which ever you choose.

Second Semester - Week 5

It's been a crazy week due to my illness and so many others being ill as well.  Bear with me, we'll get through this and get caught up...even if we have to do a make up day at my house for certain subjects like we did last semester. I will do all I can to make up the time so that we will not have to extend our school year.  Thanks again for your prayers and heart felt love.

Although some pressed ahead with most of the subjects, including the Math and Logic, many didn't or couldn't due to the virus affecting your families.  So we'll proceed with the assignments for Week 6 according to the Guide.
Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 81 - 84 today. Don't forget to complete the exercises and stay on top of your weekly tests.


Logic:
It's really great to hear that many of you are enjoying this semester's Logic and that you understand it a bit better!  Keep up the good work.  We covered lessons 10 and 11 today, please complete the corresponding exercises. 

Literature:
Please look at the Guide to see where you need to be regarding your short story.  If you've missed any assignments it's up to you to catch up.  Your actual story is due by week 10 which for us will be March 22nd.  The goal is not a long, drawn out story, but a short story with a moral; a defined objective; an obstacle that the main character has to overcome; and an outcome of the story.  Some ideas discussed don't seem to have any real substance as of yet, so more work needs to be done.  Think about it along the lines of the stories we've read and are reading.  This week please read "The Celestial Railroad" by Hawthorne and be prepared to discuss it.

Read and outline Chapter 5 this week.  I'd like to see a bit more participation from the group overall during this subject.  Some don't seem to take it as serious as they should and aren't taking notes or doing the outlines either.  With that in mind, I want to see your outlines up to this point to make sure that you're going to be prepared for the Final Exam, so please bring them in next week.


Mock Trial:
Things are really shaping up with the trial.  Don't forget to bring in your papers next week and read over the information on the Battered Women Syndrome in the book.  I participated in a webinar about the trial tonight with directors from all over the country and am looking forward to sharing with you some of the things we discussed.

Logic:

Week 3 Second Semester

What an amazing group of young scientists!!!!  I am so proud of all the hard work that went into each and every Science Fair Project!  Your presentations were great and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that each of you would have done well at the Regional Science Fair had you chosen to participate.  Thanks for all your hard work and efforts!  A's across the board.

FYI:  I know the parents and upper Challenge students that viewed your projects will have rave reviews as well and I will get their feedback to you next week.


Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 73 - 76 today. Don't forget to complete the exercises and stay on top of your weekly tests.



Logic:
I am really proud of how you guys are applying yourselves this semester in Logic.  We seem to be on track and keeping up really well.  Our first quiz for the semester is next week on Lessons 1 - 7 so please study accordingly and remember, you have to complete Exercises 6, 7a, and 7b as well.

Literature:
The "life lessons"  in the "short stories" are quite interesting thus far.  Our next story is "The Mansion" by Van Dyke.  This week you not only have to read it and be prepared to discuss the questions at the end, but you also have to write a description of the setting for your short story as well.  See the Guide for details.

Defeating Darwinism
We're moving ahead and learning the value of being able to argue and defend our beliefs definitively through both DD and Logic now.  Keep up the good work; the discussions are really great.  Read and outline Chapter 3.  Don't forget to take the type of notes that will help you to ace the final exam at the end including terms, especially those in italics.

Mock Trial:
We discussed many of the Rules of Competition today.  Don't forget to continue to become familiar with them and make notes of any questions or concerns.  This week you have to write the story of what happened in the case from the perspectives of both Officer C.M. Chaney and Joe R. May, the Pathologist.  Only use the facts outlined in the case based upon their statements and the evidence they've included.

Week 2 Second Semester

It was great seeing everyone today.  Given the circumstances, it was just what I needed.  Thanks for the love and support during this difficult time.



Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 69 - 72 today. Don't forget to stay on top of your weekly tests.




Logic:
The Final Exams were returned today.  Parents, please look over them with your child and discuss them.  The final outcome/grade is up to you.  I believe tests show us two things:  1 - how much we've learned and 2 - where our weaknesses are so that we can overcome them.   In the meantime...we covered Lessons 3 - 5 today and did many of the exercises in class.  Complete the Exercises for these three lessons and note any questions or problems you may have.

Literature:
The "short stories" are going well.  Remember, we're reading in part to expose you to "the classic short story" and to give you ideas, themes, and concepts you can also incorporate in your own short story.  Keep that in mind as you read.  This week read Little Girls Wiser Than Men by Tolstoy and finalize your idea for your short story.  See the Guide for details.

Defeating Darwinism
What an amazing discussion today on the first chapter.  Read and outline Chapter 2.  Don't forget to take the type of notes that will help you to ace the final exam at the end including terms, especially those in italics.

Mock Trial:
We discussed a few more details of the trial and some of the things they should look for as they read the notebook.  Study the Rules of Competition and make notes of any questions or concerns.

Second Semester, Week 1

We're back!!  It was really great to see everyone and get back into the swing of things.  I know we all felt as if we could use just ONE MORE WEEK! 

Keep in mind that if we get wintry, messy weather that interferes with our Tuesdays, we'll consider coming to my house that same week so we can make up the days and not have to extend our school year if that works for everyone.  They are predicting precipitation off and on all week and early next week so we'll keep you posted.  Just know that if Guilford County or Forsyth County Schools are closed or delayed we will be as well.  We have students in our upper Challenges that drive and we wouldn't want to chance their safety. 


Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 65 - 68 today.  




Logic:
I'll get the Final Exams checked asap for you.  In the meantime, the exercises for Lessons 1 and 2 of the Intermediate book are to be completed.

Literature:
This semester we're working on "short stories".  The end goal is to have you actually write your own short story based upon some of the works we'll cover in class.  This week you have to read The Cop and the Anthem by O Henry and write out a list of a least 5 ideas for your story.  See the Guide for details.

Defeating Darwinism
Read the first chapter and outline it.  Remember you are to take the type of notes that will help you to ace the final exam at the end.

Mock Trial:
We discussed the trial and some of the details.  Now it's up to you to scan through the book, notice the layout and contents.  Read through the Stipulated Facts and Evidence and we'll dissect it next week. As you read, also begin to think about what role you'd like to play.

Week 14 Updates and Homework

Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 53 - 56 today.  Be prepared, next week I'll cover 4 lessons as usual, however, over the break you will be responsible for an additional 4 on your own.



Logic:
I'm really glad to see that the Logic Day at my house really helped.  We'll plan another one or two if necessary next semester.  This week we covered Lessons 31 and 32.  Next week we'll take as much time as necessary to complete the last 4 Lessons and I'll send home the Final Exam as a take home to be completed over the break.

Literature:
I'm allowing you to choose your project from the Guide regarding "The Phantom Tollbooth.  Many expressed interest in the creative options rather than having to write another paper.  I can't wait to see what you bring in!


History of Science:
We're making great progress!  Now is the time to actually begin the experiments.  Please forgive me for the lateness of the email regarding the forms.  Don't forget to print them, they are a crucial part of your project.

Current Events:
It was an interesting day of debate to say the least.  As a teaser and final debate, several have asked to debate "Lions in Petting Zoos."  It's optional for those who want to participate.


Latin:
We covered Lessons 22 - 24 today.  Chapter 23 is a Review Chapter.  We'll try to cover the remaining chapters next week and you can review them over the break.

Week 13 Updates and Homework

Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 49 - 52 today. 



Logic:
A good day today.  We were able to review the last two lessons and cover the next two as well.  Although there were only 2 lessons, there are 4 different exercises for homework.  Don't forget about Logic Day this Thursday.  Go through the book and mark anything you need help with from Lessons 1 - 30 so that we can have a productive day Thursday.

Literature:
Great papers for Crispin The Cross of Lead. This week read "The Phantom Tollbooth.
History of Science:
Great progress thus far.  I want to see everyone's Laboratory Notebook next week with the list of materials you'll use for your experiment, the required forms completed (I'll send a link to the website), and written procedures you're planning to to use to conduct your experiments.

Current Events:
Great work again this week!  Next week it's "Should the U.S. restrict trade with nations based on their ideology?"  To make it a bit easier, the teams that did the "pro" side this week will do the "con" side next week and vice-versa.


Latin:
We covered Lessons 20 and 21 today.

Week 12 Updates and Homework

Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 45 - 48 today.  For now, it's still a bit of a review and you guys are doing great!  Keep it up!!!


Logic:
I am soooo proud of you guys!!!  What an improvement since the last test! Keep it up and don't go back to your old habits, I know you can do this!  Don't forget this week's homework from Lessons 27 and 28...Exercises 26, 27 and 28. 

Literature:
The discussion for Crispin The Cross of Lead was amazing!  We all loved this one and had quite a bit to say about it.  I look forward to the papers next week.  See the guide for details.  It's the usual 500 words.


History of Science:
Next week I need everyone to have finalized their projects.  If you haven't already, please look at the websites I gave you for ideas.  I expect to see the final question you're trying to answer and background research on your topic - citing all your sources used in bibliography format (typed).  They should be in a binder/notebook.  We'll discuss the hypothesis next week so I know that you understand it.

Current Events:
Great work in debate again this week.  We weren't able to decide on a final topic for this one, so I'll keep looking at topics and email everyone.  If you have any ideas, let me know.


Latin:
Another great class today! Complete/review assignments for Lessons 17 - 19 (18 is a review chapter).

A Wonderful Thanksgiving Opportunity to Serve the Homeless

What follows is a copy of the letter sent home today on behalf of our Westside CC Community.  Melissa Harrell has gone to great lengths to set this up.  Let's all rally around her to help with this effort!


Hi Westside Chapel Classical Family,

We have the wonderful opportunity to feed Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless community on November 14 at Center City Church.

They serve a meal every Sunday evening. Usually, this involves a plate count of just under 200. I would like to be really super organized so that we are efficient and communicate well with everyone. This is a list of what is involved. Please email me at LMKHarrell@gmail.com and let me know what you’d like to be a part of!

turkey/ham- for 200!
sweet potato casserole -2 or 3 large disposable aluminum pans each
green beans-2 or 3 lrg. disp. alum. pans each
dressing- 3 lrg.disp.alum pans
cranberry sauce- 1 lrg. disp. alum. pan
gravy-a crock pot full
rolls-for 200 (and butter)
sweet tea- as many gallons as we can get
cookies- 8 dozen or so
pies- dozen or so


****We also need someone to roll 200 napkins with plastic cutlery. It would be a nice touch if this could be done in a decorative way and put in flower pots to use as centerpieces.


**** We will need about 6 people to help serve. The group is made up of primarily men, so Dads and teenagers are preferred though Moms are welcomed too!

Week 11 Updates and Homework

Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 41 - 44 today.  Although we moved through it rather quickly, everyone seemed to grasp the information so again, keep up the great work.

Logic:
Today we discussed the most recent test and revisited Lessons 24 - 26, including the homework in an effort to make sure that everyone understood the content.  We will have another test on Lessons 24 - 26 next week so please avail yourselves to study and review.  I am not as concerned about us completing the book this semester as I am you having a thorough understanding of what we are able to complete.  As I stated in class, it is my opinion that if you cannot apply what you say you understand, them you truly do not have understanding.  Proverbs 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.  I am planning to have everyone over to my house for an all day Logic study session on November 11th.

Literature:
Good job on the papers thus far.  This week we'll discuss Crispin The Cross of Lead.


History of Science:
OUTSTANDING WORK ON THE SCIENCE SHOE BOXES!!!! I am really proud of the work and creativity shown in this assignment.  As I stated, this was to count as your Mid-Term grade and there was no score lower than a B+ in the entire group!  Don't forget to work on your Science Fair question.  You really need to narrow it down and start to prepare for the actual experiment.  I expect everyone to have their final decision and question ready for next week.

Current Events:
Great work in debate again this week.  Both efforts ended in a draw, so that tells me you're listening and preparing!  Next week it's "Dating vs. Courting" pros and cons.

Latin:
I am sooooo proud of you guys!!!  What a great Latin class today!!  Thank you for all of your efforts.  Now you see the benefits of all the practice with the charts, vocabulary and endings.  Keep up the good work and complete the homework for Lesson 15 and 16.

Week 10 Updates and Homework

Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 37 - 40 today.  Although we moved through it rather quickly, everyone seemed to grasp the information so again, keep up the great work.

Logic:
We had our test today.  By faith we'll see great improvements from the last one.  We discussed Lessons 24 - 26.  Complete Exercises 22 - 25.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Literature:
Most agree that Where the Red Fern Grows was one of the most intriguing books we've read thus far. This week's paper will discuss in detail something you're willing to work to achieve or acquire for 2 years.  Don't forget to check the Guide for the specific questions you're to answer within the paper.  As always, it should be a minimum of 500 words and follow the checklist.


History of Science:
The great Einstein was the last scientist we'll research.  This week you are to prepare a shoe box containing items that will remind us of the accomplishments of the scientists we've discussed this semester.  You are also to begin your search for your Science Fair Project and write out the preliminary question you want to answer or prove.  Pages 57 of the Guide has great questions to help you get started.  Don't forget the Deliverables Sheet that was given out today.  On the back are a number of great websites that can help you get started and offer some ideas as to projects you may want to tackle.



Current Events:
Our experiment with the smaller teams seemed to work out very well.  So we will keep the same teams with the exception of my moving Robert to Jacob's team and Holland to Tode's team.  This week you are to research political campaign reform both pros and cons.  Again, I will draw names to determine which teams debate against one another and which team is on the pro or con side so don't forget to research both sides of the issue. 

Latin:
Make sure you're prepared and have complete Lesson 14.  I will pick up with Lesson 15 and 16 next week.  Mrs. Richardson is going to observe the class next week and give input and suggestions.

Week 9 Assignments & Updates

Math:
Algebra ½ Students: We covered Lessons 33 - 36 today.  Everyone seemed to grasp the information so keep up the great work.
Logic:
We discussed in great detail the previous test from Unit 2.  We also did a review of any information covered up to Lesson 22 in preparation for the test next week.  In an effort to help bring the grades up, I will include infomation from Unit 2 and Unit 3 up to Lesson 22.  Other than preparing for the test, there is no additional homework.  As always, take the time to do the Review Questions for each Lesson at the end of the Unit as well as the "Additional Exercises" for any Lesson you may have had questions or difficulty understanding.

Literature:
Great job on the journals!!!  This week we're reading Where the Red Fern Grows.  Even if you've read it before, please take the time to read it again and be prepared for disccusion next week.


History of Science:
Very interesting facts on Marie Currie; and the explanations on the Periodic Tables were right on.  We're working on the great Einstien this week.  See pages 55 - 57 for details.


Current Events:
As an experiment, we broke up into 4 teams this week.  Each team has to research and prepare to debate both the pros and cons of "Illegal Immigration."  I wil draw names to determine which teams debate against one another and which team is on the pro or con side. 

Latin:
Well, things didn't go as well today as last week.  Not everyone did the chart and vocabulary practice and there seemed to be a bit more confusion.  I don't know how to reach the class in this subject because not enough effort is being put on the subject at home.  With that in mind, we may have another parent to teach Latin as we move forward.
