Remember, the Guide outlines all of the assignments, what follows is an update/review of what took place in the class and gives a quick glance into the upcoming assignments.
Math:
Algebra ½ Students: Another day of review per say. We covered Lessons 5 – 8.
Logic:
Much better understanding today. Having them “preview” the upcoming lessons as a means of preparation seemed to help. We’ll have our first quiz on the first unit next week. Have them complete this week’s assignment, review terms and definitions, and complete the Unit Review in order to prepare. We discussed in detail everything on the quiz during class.
Literature:
Our Shiloh discussion went really well today. This is an amazingly insightful group! Papers are due next week. See the Guide for an overview. We discussed the details and expectations in class.
History of Science:
Great papers! This week, it’s a paper on Copernicus and a poster demonstrating two of his theories.
Current Events:
I knew this was going to be great and I wasn’t disappointed!!! They brought in facts, statistics, personal insight, and more!!!! It’s really caused them to begin the critical thinking process!!! I can’t wait to see how they tackle “Methods of Education (public, private, magnet/governors, boarding, charter, & homeschooling)”. It will be interesting to see how they decide to handle this in either a comparison of pro/con; laws threatening homeschooling; etc. It’s totally up to them.
Latin:
I ordered several things for Classical Academic Press including Activity Books and their “Clash Dash” Vocabulary card game. After a quick review, we played games with teams competing to see how much they remembered and then attempted the card game. It was a bit awkward, but I pray it will improve as we continue. They should continue to review their vocabulary from Chapters 1 – 10 in Primer A and practice their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Noun Declension Chart Endings. A sheet was sent home. By the way, the link on the blog page for Classical Academic Press now takes you directly to their "Headventure" page which helps with practicing vocabulary. Points are given each week for those who log on and practice.

Latin Update
Okay, I know I said no Latin homework, but it would really be a good idea if they could review their charts in the back of Primer A. We’ll spend time working on charts taken from pages 204 – 206 in class. Don’t’ worry, we won’t try to complete them all at one time, but we will practice filling them in and building upon them until we can easily complete them.
Log onto the publisher’s website http://www.classicalacademicpress.com/ and practice the vocabulary from the first 10 lessons.
The website has a new feature...if you click on "Headventure Land" it will take you directly to the Flash Dash games and such.

Week 1 Update:
Thanks for an amazing first day!!!! I’m really excited about the upcoming school year and all that we’ll have the opportunity to learn and experience together!! We truly have an amazing group! I know things seem a bit foggy today but remember...

Math:
Algebra ½ Students: Today was pretty much a review for the class and they all seemed on track and ready. We covered Lessons 1 – 4 and did the Practice Problems in class. Complete the Problems for each lesson and bring them to class next week so that I can reward points.
Logic:
Okay, as suspected this is the class the brought about the first “glazed over looks” in the class. It seems a bit strange for now, but trust me, it will get better. They’ll need to read Chapters 1 and 2 again, take notes (including definitions and such), and complete the first 2 exercises. We completed them verbally in class. It may be helpful to maintain a “Logic Study Book” or flash cards with definitions and such. Have them also to read through the next two chapters so that it won’t feel like “Greek” when we discuss it next week. Again, points will be given for notes and completion of workbook assignments.
Literature:
We discussed the format for essays and introductory paragraphs. Checklist sheets for their essays were also distributed. This week they are to read Shiloh and be prepared to discuss it in class.
History of Science:
We discussed the Hippocratic Oath in both its original and modern versions as well as had a brief overview of Archimedes. This week they are to research Archimedes and write a 400 word research paper on him and his accomplishments. Details are outlined in the Guide on page 56. Because this is a research paper, I am NOT looking for dress-ups and such as much as the quality of the research and their pulling facts from 2 – 3 sources. This is a somewhat different type of writing assignment, so I will use the checklist found on page 61 of the Guide.

A sheet was sent home outlining all the topics we’ll discuss in Current Events for the semester so that you can be prepared as a family to discuss these issues as well as determine if your student will participate in those discussions in class. We briefly ventured into the topic of “right to life issues” as they pertain to the original Hippocratic Oath and the effect on our society. I brought in an article discussing the Oath from World Magazine. It was written by a Christian doctor. We used it to help them understand how to research and complete the sheets for CE (distributed in class). This week they are to research right to life issues as outlined in the Guide using at least 2 sources. They will use their articles and sheets to participate in class discussion of the subject next week.

We will continue to use the Latin for Children books so have them bring both Primer A and B next week. No homework this week in Latin.
